Chuckling, they both agree he is *Anubis* again! ********** They enter the room to find Anubis comfortably seated and drinking a goblet of wine. He pointedly asks Isis if all of her powers are back. She replies that everything seems to have returned with the exception of her ability to change shape. Anubis finds that unsettling and has no answe as to why it is so.They both wonder if it might have to do with everything reverting to what it was before Apep caused all the mayhem his first appearance had. Then Anubis drops his bomb...he informs Isis that she may be the catalyst..the one who Apep uses to find his way to the rest of them. Isis is understandingly devastated, her grip on Kafele's paw letting him know that in no uncertain terms! It's obvious as the conversation goes on, that none of them really have a solution...only many suggestions. And, none that will work as things are now. ********** Theirs is not the only conversation going on this day. Back in Khufu's home, he is serving a meal to his 'Master'..a very happy 'Master' at the moment. For, spread out before him is a scroll.....a scroll containing the information for a devastating ritual....the blood ritual. All that is needed for it is the sacrifice. And Apep has decided on the victims....cats from Bastet's Temple. He assures Khufu that even one of those cats would contain enough magic. But, if he could obtain more? Well..... They decide on a half-dozen or so, to be taken by the rat who aided them in obtaining Apep's body. And, to be attracted by a poisoned food. Oh, not to kill....just to put in a deep sleep. After all, Apep is well nown for his use of poison! And, apparantly Khufu is just as talented. ************ Another step is put in place. |

They find Benj'Amin hard at work on the final preparations for casting the ring. Bastet looks please with what she sees and bids both Benj'Amin and Anubis to break their fast. Conversation turns to more questions from the mouse and Anubis explains just who Apep is and why it's so important that they find him. ^* Anubis shakes his head closing his eyes as he remembers. "I'll keep it short...he goes a ways back, learning ages ago how to immortalize himself. He has remained ageless, illness cannot effect him as a mortal does. He desires power--namely Ra's power. He would cause the sun, the very eye of Ra to not rise if he could... and believe me he tried." Anubis takes another drink to moisten his sore throat.*^ ******* In another room of the Temple, Kafele awakens to find Isis still asleep, in the throws of a nightmare. When she finally awakens, she confesses that it was Apep she dreamed of. He tries to reassure her, getting her to even smile a little. He leaves her to find a fresh gown, heading for the workroom to break his fast. *********************** He enters the room to find Anubis still explaining about Apep. Taking a plate of food, he sits down to listen too, although this is a story he knows well...having lived through it. Anubis explains that Apep wanted the ring because of it's powers. With it, it might be possible for him to overcome Ra himself! That is why the ring that the mouse is creating is so important. The conversation moves to A-Neh-bis and her disappearance from the Underworld. Anubis is convinced that she didn't get out on her own and that Apep taught her how to do what she did. Bastet wonders if A-Neh-bis can be stopped before she does any more harm, but Anubis confesses that he knows of no way it can be done. Isis enters the room, looking more like herself in a linen gown instead of wrapped in a blanket. The others greet her as she settles beside Kafele, picking at some food. Anubis inquires if er powers are back and she admits she hasn't tried them. She's afraid to find out they're not! Bastet turns to Benj'amin, inquiring how the ring will be crafted now. He explains the procedure and promises her it will be ready soon. Then, asking to be awakened in an hour, he curls up on his mat for a quick nap. Bastet and Anubis discuss where the best place would be to hide the ring and how best to trick Apep. It's obvious everyone's nerves are frayed and the conversation ends rather early. Isis and Kafele retire once more to the relative safety of that back room. Bastet and Anubis return to the priestesses sleeping chamber. But, they are too frazzled to sleep quite yet and it is here that Anubis finally admits things may be even worse than they all suspect. And...Bastet finally accepts that he may be right. |

Apep informs his new 'assistant' that the first item on his agenda is to find Kafele and Anubis and *disembowel* them for their part in his death. Once that task is completed, it will be time to find Isis and remove from her possession THE RING that Apep so covets. After which he plans to lock she and Anubis in the Underworld forever and 'take over the world!' Khufu is all for going out and doing it all today! But Apep reminds him that he must fully get his powers back first. He then explains to his curious assistant that Isis and the are bound and getting it will not be all that easy, especially with Kafele rarely not at her side. And with that meddling Bastet always watching things! But, he reveals one very encouraging and unexpected happening. Anubis has gotten on the wrong side of Ra...and in the process of receiving a dressing down, lost much of his confidence...and his powers. The evil pair are convinced that all is on their side and they toast to their success! *************************** Back at Bastet's Temple, the others are also awakening to face a new day full of many questions. Isis is uncertainly adapting to her human guise again and searching her heart for a means to accept what this means. As Kafele attempts to reassure her that they will get through this also..Anubis appears in the room. A very different Anubis from what they're used to seeing. Isis angrily demands to know where he has been and why he wasn't here to prevent what happened! Just as she begins to berate him, Bastet steps into the room and her anger makes Isis' look like a mere annoyance. *^Bastet opens the door further and looks in, her eyes hardening as she sees the god just lounging there. "Well, so you have decided to grace us with your presence?" Her words are cold and clipped as she crosses the room. "Might I ask where you have been while the world has been turned upside down?" ^* *^Anubis refuses to look up, he simply leans where he is and grumbles a quick, "No, you may not." His voice is barely audible--as one who has done a LOT of talking lately. ^* And
thus the tone is set for some very angry conversation between the god and
goddess! So angry is Bastet that she reverts to her Lioness form, lifting
Anubis up with ease and shaking him as she repeatedly asks him where he
was. Isis, standing beside Kafele, utters the words that should change
her also. But, shockingly, nothing happens and she looks up at Kafele in
disbelief.

Bastet arrives at the market, heading straight for the stall of the gold-seller. After choosing a bar of gold large enough for the ring, she muses over jewelers tools, wishing that Benj'Amin were here to take a look at what is offered. As if by magic, he shows up and the two decide together on what to purchase. At the same time, a rather dour looking priest is also attempting to make purchases...quite odd purchases. Anyone noticing him would wonder about the amount of mumbling he seems to do. In fact, he looks as if he were talking to himself...and having quite a conversation. A rat of the lowest kind seems to have caught his attention, and the two strike up a bargain. A jewel changes hands and the rat/thief promises to lead Khufu to the body he stole the necklace he wears from. Both of our sets of *shoppers* begin to go their separate ways. But just for an instant, their paths cross and Bastet feels a cold overshadowing. ******** Khufu follows the rat to the outskirts of the City, where bodies of those not deemed worthy of any sort of ritual burial have been dumped in shallow graves. By some tragic oversight, Apep's earthly body is right there for the taking. Dismissing the rat, Khufu smiles to his *master*, whose Ka resides in the Ankh around his neck. He swipes the very wraps off of other bodies, wrapping Apep's into a fairly unobtrusive package and hefts him up on his shoulder, carrying him back to his home. "Hurry Khufu! The time is right! Get the herbs we still need and let us begin the ritual!" Khufu takes the body into the hidden temple at his home and then sets off to buy the last of the herbs. Luck is with him and he finds the needed rare herbs all at one stall. Triumphant, he hurries back to the body and the ritual begins. ******** Meanwhile, back at Bastet's Temple, Isis and Kafele, still hidden in the farthest room, are spending a few quiet moments speaking of his Father's Pride while Bastet and Benj'Amin are getting things started with the ring. Out of the comparative calm...an ominous feeling suddenly builds...and both Bastet and Isis feel it at the same time. Isis, with Kafele right at her heels, comes running into the workroom, her eyes wide with horror. Bastet attempts to call Anubis, getting no answer. Kafele pulls Isis to him, reaching for the knife he always carries. But this time, no earthly weapon could possibly be of any aid. *********** While ancient words are spoken and herbs are burned..a ritual of pure evil re-unites Apep's Ka with his body. The very foundations of the universe are shaken...time itself forced to shift! In the 'safety' of Bastet's Temple...Isis screams as she is torn from Kafele's arms, disappearing in a cold, dark mist. Moments later, the room becomes light again, revealing the goddess lying on the floor. No longer a lioness, she has reverted to her human guise..and lost her powers. ************ Khufu and Apep celebrate their success with a meal and then a night's sleep in preparation for their next move. ************ Stunned by what's happened, Bastet and Isis know that Apep has returned. They attempt to explain what has happened to a very confused Benj'Amin..a mouse who now knows why he must succeed in creating this ring! Both Kafele and Bastet assure Isis that they will find a way to undo this! But Isis is too shocked and uncertain to really comprehend much of anything. And so, Kafele takes her back to the safety of the High Priestess' Chamber where she finally falls into an exhausted sleep. Bastet retires to her borrowed room, just as tired, but very concerned about the missing Anubis. |

The first stirrings of horror are felt in the City of Bubastis, as it's inhabitants spend a normal afternoon shopping at the stalls of the market. Unsettling emanations from someone or something cause the resident goddesses, Isis and Bastet along with Isis' mate, Kafele, to go on high alert. Perfectly blending into the crowds, a strange priest seeks to buy certain *herbs*. A hyper demi-god, with a limited understanding of good and evil, uses her powers to *play games* with all she finds in her path. |

A-Neh-bis' Story A long time ago, not long after Anubis' more 'playful' years, the great god Ra came upon an unusual discovery. A young demi-god had discovered that she was not a simple mortal. After taking the little fennec into his own paws Ra decided the bundle of mischief might prove to be a perfect pay back for another god who had fallen out of favor due to his own mischievous antics. Thus Anubis was given the little rascal A-Neh-bis and entrusted with her teaching in the arts of mastering her magical talent. It wasn't long before Anubis became a perfect wreck beneath the playful fennec! She virtually tore his temple to the ground with her silly games. Any attempt to discipline her only seemed to make her more cheerful. Unable at this point to discover why, Anubis brought her to the Underworld and attempted to teach her where real lives could no longer be effected. Years passed and A-Neh-bis grew older, but NOT up! There seemed to be no change in her ability to reason or grasp any reality what-so-ever. Everything was funny, even if someone got hurt! Anubis was beginning to feel the effects of trying to teach the seemingly unteachable. Her cuteness could only spare her so much from his temper, and he was finding it hard not to belt her! Shape-changing her, locking her up, screaming at her, making her sit in the corner--it was always fun to her. What could he possibly do to contain her? Finally, Anubis sat down in his private Inner Sanctuary and thought about all the magic he had seen her do. Somehow her spells had never been complete. Thus far he had chalked it up to lack of discipline and experience...but what was it that they were missing? Her favorite game was to alter things from small to large--as large as his entire temple, and not even he, master of the magic arts, could do that! It took far to much concentration to make it real... REAL! That's what was missing! A-Neh-bis' magic was merely illusions! She wasn't changing anything except a critters perceptions. Granted, with her irrepressible sense of humor that was enough to drive one insane--but it gave him a whole new understanding of the little pest. It's why she never grew up and could never be disciplined--if nothing was ever real to her, it was the mind-set of a child. She was innocent, and would never grasp reality--and her magic reflected this. He made no mistake, she was VERY clever, especially at mind games, but her plane of thought was on another level entirely... and this gave him a grand idea of how to take care of the little pest for the rest of eternity! Re-entering his Obsidian Gateway he took A-Neh-bis to a room in the Underworld. Smiling, he explained that this was to be her home now. Clapping her small paws, A-Neh-bis bounded into the room and spun around with a laugh. He couldn't believe how easy it had been to get her in there. Closing the door, he used his magic and sealed her inside. As a demi-god she would be fine. The room was magically designed, as is the whole of the Underworld, to provide for the dweller. With that he returned to his duties--A-Neh-bis was out-of-sight/out-of-mind. In the present <decades later>! Back in the Underworld Apep, evil incarnate, floats about as a ka, unable to return to the Realm of the Living where his revenge waits. Sensing magic being used he floats into the magic room to find a small fennec rocking back and forth chanting magic spells. She is dressed as a god. Getting a wicked idea he asks what she is doing there. "Nubi' be testin' me... seein' if I can gets outted." She grins back. "Oh really..." "Wanna pway wif me?" a giggle escapes her. "Ummm... no. But I could possibly help you a bit." He offers, knowing that he himself cannot cast any magic--he watches the effects of the last spell she had cast and watches it fade. Pointing to the wall, she laughs. "See? Me maked howes, but dey go 'way." "I see... maybe you need to try a different spell, little one." "Me be cawwed A-Neh-bis, 'de nuisance. Hehehe." Rocking back and forth on her tail she grins at her unofficial title. "I see," Apep's ka smirks, "Well... let me hear what sort of spell you're using and maybe I can help you." Leaping up on her paws, she grins, "You be'd nice, D'hank you." After speaking a few lines the hole appears for a bit and vanishes without a trace. Apep runs the lines through a few times to figure out what she is doing and discovers how he can fix it. A quick explanation and the fennec casts a real spell... a hole opens in the room's wall... and she slips out of it. "Hehehe, goo' fwien'. You help me, you nice." She claps her paws and dances. "You should go tell Anubis you 'passed' his 'test'." Apep's ka smiles, waiting to 'aid' her once more. "Hmmm... He in 'de weal wowld now. Me no knowed how to get dere." "Oh, but I do... follow me..." A-Neh-bis, under Apep's instructions, opens a hole in the Obsidian Gateway and pops through... waving good-bye she wanders out through the temple casting a quick invisibility spell on herself. But, she left the hole open behind her... with a sly grin Apep floats through and sends a telepathic message to his waiting servant. A bolt of magic shoots through the air, closing the hole and whisking the ka away, and into a magical Ankh. Khufu, Apep's loyal servant, now has nearly all he needs to bring back his master to the realm of the living. Back in Isis' temple, at the precise moment A-Neh-bis opens the real hole, Anubis and Isis feel something is VERY wrong. Anubis knows it is a magical flux, but he does not know why. Tearing away from the mortals he returns to the Underworld... |
